If you haven’t visited a dentist in a while you may have signs of gum disease including swollen or bleeding gums, or excess tartar and calculus build up between your teeth and be told that you need a “deep cleaning.” Dentists diagnose this by taking x-rays that show the spaces between your teeth (see attached photo).
What this means is plaque has calcified on your teeth below your gum line and the only way to remove it is to have your teeth professionally cleaned. This may include use of a local anesthetic to allow the procedure to be as comfortable as possible while removing these calcified build ups below your gum.
Another thing that many people don’t realize is that this isn’t a “one and done” type of procedure. Once you have a “deep cleaning” it’s important to visit your dentist every 3 months for the first year to make sure that the gum disease doesn’t progress. Many people continue to have their teeth cleaned every 3 months and some can go back to a normal routine of having their teeth cleaned every 6 months.
If you are currently seeing a dentist, great! If you, or someone you know, haven’t seen a dentist in a while, it’s important that you have routine professional care.
If you don’t have a regular dentist, our office, Advanced Dental offers a new client special for $123 where you can get your teeth cleaned, get an exam and have necessary x-rays. It’s a great way to get checked out and see exactly what is happening in your mouth.
